Paul Sarbanes
Person
Born
Sarbanes led the Senate side of the 2002 accounting-reform legislation that created the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Registration, inspections and disciplinary powers moved oversight of public-company auditors beyond professional self-regulation. The board was itself placed under SEC supervision, so its independence was from the profession it examined, not from public regulation.
