Frank Sinatra
Person
Born
Sinatra's dramatic work is especially persuasive when the familiar assurance begins to fracture. From Here to Eternity gives his restless energy a vulnerable edge; The Man with the Golden Arm pushes further into the desperation of a man struggling with addiction. These are substantial characters whose needs cannot be met by charm alone. Start with the two films together and notice how differently he uses posture, speed and stillness. They make a stronger case for his acting than the fact that a celebrated singer could carry a film.
