Harold Wilson

Wilson's April 1951 resignation deserves its own reading alongside Bevan's. Explaining his departure as President of the Board of Trade, he argued that raw-material shortages made the announced rearmament programme impracticable and threatened exports, living standards and social services. He supported effective defence expenditure; his stated principle was that an unrealistic programme should not become the justification for eroding a free health service.
