Eden resigned as Foreign Secretary on 20 February 1938 after disagreement with Neville Chamberlain over negotiations with Italy. The immediate dispute concerned whether talks should begin before satisfactory assurances about Italian conduct, including in Spain. His letter described a wider difference of outlook. Calling this simply a rejection of all appeasement would flatten the record: the timing and conditions of negotiation were central to the actual Cabinet breach.
