In April 1951, Bevan left the Cabinet over the government's financial priorities and proposed NHS charges for dentures and spectacles. His resignation statement connected the breach in a free health service to a rearmament programme he considered economically unworkable. The familiar story about dental and optical charges is real, but incomplete without that larger argument over resources, inflation and the protection of social provision.
