Malcom McLean

McLean built a trucking business before developing Sea-Land around containerised shipping. Coordinating ships, trucks and standardised cargo handling reduced the friction of moving goods between transport modes. The 1969 sale of Sea-Land realised ownership value, but his later United States Lines venture ended in bankruptcy: a successful network investment did not make later shipping bets safe.
