Al Green
Person
Born
Green's religious commitment became an enduring pastoral role at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis. After his ordination in 1976, leading a congregation became a substantial part of his life alongside the better-known singing career. Gospel recordings alone would not establish a second profession; the church leadership does. His interviews about holding both identities offer the most revealing starting point. The familiar voice remained important, but preaching and responsibility to a congregation placed it within a different kind of relationship.
