Alexander Hamilton

Hamilton helped turn a proposed federal constitution into an operating political settlement through the campaign for ratification. The Federalist essays, written with Madison and John Jay, defended the new allocation of national power and remain part of the evidence used to interpret it. His contribution here is advocacy and explanation, not authorship of every provision he defended. The enduring issue is how a stronger national government can act effectively while remaining constrained by a divided constitutional structure.
