B. R. Ambedkar

As chair of India's Drafting Committee, Ambedkar helped translate the Constituent Assembly's decisions into a detailed parliamentary constitution. His defence of constitutional morality linked formal rules to the behaviour needed to sustain them. He also warned that political equality would remain insecure without social equality. The legacy therefore includes both a workable allocation of public power and an unresolved test of whether constitutional rights are experienced in everyday life. The Assembly and its other contributors retain their share of authorship.
