Buying and integrating steel mills was central to Mittal's expansion from an Indonesian operation into a multinational producer. The 2006 combination with Arcelor extended that strategy on an exceptional scale. His family retained a substantial ownership interest, so consolidation changed the size and reach of the business behind its wealth. Commodity demand and the cost of operating those mills still determined how valuable that interest could be.
