A filmmaker staying near a border is asked whether his camera has recorded something that matters to a local dispute. The apparently simple question places him inside rules he does not control. Panahi's fictional self is no magically detached observer: looking and recording have consequences. The film's dry wit gradually gives way to a much harsher awareness of other people's exposure.
