Schwarz expanded a family trading business into the retail group behind Lidl and Kaufland. The formats addressed different shopping trips: a restricted discount assortment at Lidl and a broader supermarket offer at Kaufland. Reinvesting in stores, purchasing and distribution increased the value of the privately controlled group. His father's business supplied the starting platform; the later retail scale was built through sustained expansion.
