Born
Albrecht and his brother Theo took over their mother's grocery business after the Second World War, then divided their operations into Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord. Karl developed the southern business around a small assortment and simple stores. Low overheads and strong purchasing discipline supported the prices that drew customers. Private ownership allowed the value of a large retail network to accumulate within the family behind an exceptionally unshowy format.
