Sol Price

Price developed membership retailing through FedMart and then Price Club, founded with his son Robert in 1976. Charging for access to a limited, keenly priced assortment created a different relationship with shoppers from the conventional department store. Price Club's 1993 merger with Costco extended the model's reach. The family's philanthropic foundation also shows how resources accumulated through these retail ventures could be directed beyond the business.
