Person
Born
Sinegal learned warehouse retailing before co-founding Costco with Jeff Brotman in 1983. A deliberately restricted range, substantial purchasing volumes and rapid inventory turnover helped support low mark-ups; membership income was another part of the economics. His founder shareholding made the success of that operating discipline personally valuable. Costco illustrates how a retailer can build a large business by declining to offer shoppers every possible product.
