Jeff Bezos

An online bookshop gave Bezos a route into retail without a conventional network of high-street stores. Amazon expanded the assortment, built fulfilment capacity and opened its marketplace to other sellers, adding fees and services to direct merchandise sales. His shareholding in that expanding company created enormous wealth. Cloud computing later became an important business too, so retail explains the starting point and much of the infrastructure, not the whole fortune.
