Liz Cheney

Cheney broke with Donald Trump and much of the Republican leadership over the 2020 election and the attack on the Capitol. House Republicans removed her as conference chair in May 2021; Wyoming Republican primary voters then chose Harriet Hageman over her in August 2022. These were separate losses of party office and nomination. Cheney had not needed to leave the party formally for her opposition to its dominant leader to make her position untenable within those two institutions.
