Benito Mussolini
Person
Born
Mussolini built a Fascist one-party dictatorship, but the monarchy and the Fascist Grand Council retained institutional positions that his personal image obscured. The king's formal authority and elite defections became decisive in his removal in 1943. Those limits did not prevent dictatorship, political repression or the antisemitic laws introduced in 1938. His case is useful for examining how authoritarian consolidation can coexist with surviving institutions that eventually turn against the ruler.
