Hafez al-Assad

Hafez al-Assad relied on the Ba'ath Party, armed forces and powerful security formations, with trusted commanders and family connections helping secure the regime. The Defence Brigades commanded by his brother Rifaat were implicated in the Tadmor prison killings and the violent suppression of Hama. These were organised operations by identifiable state forces, not merely abstract examples of a strong presidency. The institutional focus helps distinguish command relationships, armed opposition and the large-scale abuses committed against prisoners and civilians.
