Oracle's September 2025 proxy recorded Ellison's beneficial holding at 40.6% of its ordinary shares. Retention was only part of the story: Oracle reported reducing its outstanding share count by 35% through repurchases between the start of its 2016 financial year and the end of 2025. A founder's percentage can therefore rise because the denominator shrinks, even without buying an equivalent proportion of new shares.
