Abdulsalami Abubakar
Person
Born
Abubakar organised Nigeria's 1998–99 transition after Sani Abacha's death, releasing political detainees and overseeing elections that culminated in the May 1999 handover to Olusegun Obasanjo. As the outgoing military ruler, his decisive contribution was relinquishing the executive authority he held. The transition was imperfect: voting irregularities were reported, and the new constitution was promulgated by the military government. The handover restored civilian institutions without giving the process an entirely civilian origin.
