Raúl Alfonsín
Person
Born
Alfonsín's inauguration in December 1983 restored an elected civilian presidency after Argentina's military dictatorship. His government established the disappearance inquiry and pursued the trial of the junta leaders, making accountability part of the transition. Military resistance exposed its limits: the Full Stop and Due Obedience laws subsequently curtailed prosecutions. His record therefore contains both an important assertion of civilian justice and concessions that restricted the victims' access to it.
