Richard Branson

Branson's portfolio grew from a mail-order record business into investments across travel, telecommunications, financial services and other sectors. Virgin's own explanation distinguishes investee businesses from companies that merely license the name. That is essential when assessing the fortune behind the brand: a Virgin logo does not establish that Branson owns the whole company, or even that the group holds an equity interest in it. Partnerships and disposals are part of the history.
