Friis shared Skype's founding and ownership history with Niklas Zennström. A 2007 settlement paid the original shareholders collectively $530 million in place of further potential earn-out payments after the eBay acquisition. The founders later held a combined interest through Joltid before Microsoft's purchase. His case brings a less visible part of selling a company into view: contingent payments and retained intellectual-property interests can shape the outcome long after the initial announcement.
