Rodri

Rodri's winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final was the visible reward for a role centred on balance. UEFA's observers highlighted his work between the two penalty areas, while his own explanation of midfield play emphasises positioning, second balls and choosing the team's tempo. Constantly forcing forward passes invites counterattacks; constantly passing sideways creates little danger. His value to Manchester City's treble side lay in judging that trade-off while remaining available behind attacks.
