Fernandinho (footballer, born May 1985)

Fernandinho adapted from a midfield partnership with Yaya Touré into the varied positional demands of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Holding midfield required both defensive judgement and the passing to start another attack; his later use in defence reflected that broader understanding. City's title-winning teams benefited from a player who could recognise what the surrounding arrangement needed. His versatility should not blur the distinction between roles, but it helps explain why coaches trusted him to keep their system connected.
