Didier Deschamps

Deschamps helped provide the organisation and energy behind France's 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 successes. His job was not to compete with the team's most imaginative attackers for attention, but to keep midfield functioning around them. At Euro 2000, Vieira offered a more ranging partner. Deschamps is a useful example of leadership expressed through the work of a position: staying connected to team-mates and sustaining the structure that lets others take attacking risks.
