Gilberto Silva

Gilberto described his role as sweeping up in midfield and playing efficiently around more flamboyant team-mates. That was a skill, not an admission that he contributed little. Alongside Vieira at Arsenal, he helped protect the centre and keep possession useful, including during the unbeaten 2003/04 league season. His preference for simple decisions made the attacking players' work easier. Watch where he positions himself before a move breaks down, rather than waiting only for an obvious challenge.
