John D. Rockefeller
Person
Born
Rockefeller founded the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1901, providing an institutional base for experimental medicine. Its laboratories opened in 1906 and its research hospital followed in 1910. The project was developed with advisers and his son, rather than being one donor's scientific achievement. The enduring contribution was an organisation in which specialist researchers could investigate disease over many years, later becoming Rockefeller University.
