Person
Born
Eli and Edythe Broad helped launch the Broad Institute in 2004, then supplied a $400 million endowment in 2008 to make the venture permanent. The change in funding structure matters: an initial collaboration became an institution with resources beyond its founding timetable. The institute brought researchers at Harvard, MIT and associated hospitals together around genomics and biomedicine. Its discoveries belong to those research teams, while the Broads helped provide their institutional home.
