William Myron Keck

Keck used wealth from Superior Oil to establish the W. M. Keck Foundation in 1954. Its continuing research programmes support science, engineering and medicine, including laboratories and approaches that need substantial early backing. The lasting mechanism is a grant-making institution able to consider successive projects. Later awards are decisions by the foundation's trustees and staff, so they should not all be described as personal choices made by its founder.
