Henry Wellcome

Wellcome's 1936 will placed his pharmaceutical business and other assets behind a trust supporting health research. Later share sales, including the sale of the remaining Wellcome company interest in 1995, converted that inheritance into a diversified endowment. The resulting organisation could fund successive generations of researchers. Its continuing work is financed through that endowment, rather than by treating the modern pharmaceutical company as its owner or annual donor.
