David Packard

Packard founded the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in 1987, creating an organisation dedicated to ocean exploration and technology. It is distinct from the neighbouring public aquarium. Continuing support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation helped sustain its research vessels, engineering and scientific work over decades. That ongoing operating support is central to the example: building a facility is only the beginning when research also requires staff and repeated expeditions.
