Howard Hughes

Hughes founded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1953 and transferred ownership of Hughes Aircraft to it. The institute's president later stressed that this happened during Hughes's lifetime; HHMI did not receive his estate when he died. The aircraft company's 1985 sale changed the funding base again. This is an unusual example of an operating business supporting medical research before its value became a financial endowment for a much larger research enterprise.
