Ratan Tata

Under Tata's leadership, the Tata Education and Development Trust provided Cornell with a $50 million endowment in 2008. Half established scholarships for students from India and half supported agriculture and nutrition work connected with India. The trust, rather than Tata's personal bank account, was the donor. That division of funding links access to education with research, and gives two identifiable purposes against which the gift can be assessed.
