Big Little Lies (2017)

The competitive rituals around a wealthy Californian school turn private relationships into public performances. The women are both observant about one another and capable of missing what is happening at home. Its murder frame offers a familiar hook, but the stronger connection is the social work required to keep an enviable life looking enviable. Domestic abuse makes parts of it much harsher than polished surfaces suggest.
