Kevin Macdonald combines the climbers' retrospective testimony with staged mountain scenes, keeping memory and reconstruction distinguishable. The 1985 Siula Grande ordeal turns one emergency decision into another person's almost impossible descent. Knowing that someone can tell the story does not remove the suspense of how each short distance was crossed.
