Damages (2007)

Patty Hewes offers Ellen Parsons access to serious legal work and an unsettling education in how power operates. Damages makes the distance between the public language of justice and the private demands of a mentor a source of suspense. This is a dark thriller, so instruction can become coercion rather than a difficult but healthy apprenticeship. Pick it when you want to keep asking who benefits from the lesson being taught.
