Hacks (2021)

Deborah Vance can teach Ava what makes a joke survive in front of an audience, but her generosity does not remove her power to decide whose work is seen. Hacks makes the exchange reciprocal without pretending the two women begin on equal terms. The comedy is particularly useful on revision, pride and the difference between taking a note and surrendering a voice. Choose it for real craft inside a relationship that can be affectionate and punishing.
