A teenager's education is distributed among people whose own lives remain unfinished. Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning bring conflicting versions of freedom into the same household. The 1979 setting supplies history without making every exchange a lesson; growing up includes discovering that helpful adults cannot agree on what help means.
