The Luminaries (2020)

A young woman arriving in nineteenth-century New Zealand becomes entangled in desire, money and a murder during the gold rush. Eleanor Catton reshapes her own novel for television, using coincidence and astrology as part of its deliberately intricate design. This is the atmospheric puzzle option, with exploitation and colonial inequality behind the promise of making a fresh start.
