Descending Stories (2016)

Also known as Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū, this 2016 Japanese series follows performers whose art depends on voice, timing and years of practice. Animation makes small changes of posture and expression carry an entire story within a story. Its two-season journey is a deliberate dramatic detour, with artistic inheritance, jealousy and grief taking the place of action spectacle.
