The Maxx (1995)

A homeless man's superhero world and a social worker's ordinary life keep intruding on one another. The shifting animation styles make the instability meaningful rather than decorative, with fantasy protecting and exposing painful experience. This striking older MTV discovery is only a partial adaptation of the comic, with sexual violence and trauma beneath its surreal surfaces.
