The Good Lord Bird (2020)

A fictional young narrator accompanies John Brown from the conflicts of Bleeding Kansas towards the Harpers Ferry raid. The Western borderland becomes a place where righteous certainty can be inspiring, absurd and terrifying at once. Ethan Hawke's forceful performance anchors the seven-part satire, with slavery and lethal violence preventing its humour becoming reassurance.
