The Casual Vacancy (2015)

A parish councillor's death leaves a seat that becomes a proxy fight over responsibility for a poorer neighbouring estate. The Casual Vacancy connects apparently respectable local arguments to the lives affected by their outcome. Choose it for a community whose disagreement is about resources as well as manners. The three-part adaptation is compact, with darker material involving addiction, abuse and a child's vulnerability underneath the village rivalries.
