Fringe (2008)

A succession of grotesque cases can initially obscure the family story and the larger science-fiction premise. The late first-season run, culminating in its finale, is the clearest test of whether those elements change your interest. On a return visit, small details acquire another function. The cases remain disturbing, and no later mythology makes them incidental.
