Sam's return to Kansas includes loss, family friction and the gradual work of finding people with whom she can be unguarded. Singing and ordinary companionship provide space between the painful conversations. Its three-season dramedy journey is a generous starting point for this mood, with grief present throughout and warmth earned through attention rather than constant reassurance.
