The Empress (2022)

Elisabeth enters the Habsburg court and discovers that becoming an emperor's wife does not give her freedom from the institution around him. Devrim Lingnau makes the romance a point of entry into competing claims on a young woman's behaviour. The German-language drama is a good choice for Bridgerton's tension between personal desire and public role, with a darker political setting. Treat its dramatised court as romance and power, rather than a historical reference.
