Sweet Bean (2015)
Movie
Released
Tokue's patient work with sweet bean paste changes a struggling dorayaki shop before the people around it understand her history. Naomi Kawase makes preparation an act of attention rather than a magic recipe for happiness. The warmth of the growing friendship meets the cruelty of exclusion associated with Hansen's disease. A tender choice, but the prejudice matters as much as the pastries.
