Tampopo (1985)

Improving a small ramen shop becomes a wonderfully overcommitted collective project, while surrounding vignettes keep changing what it means to eat. Juzo Itami makes appetite comic, competitive and sometimes erotic. The older exception is the lively entry point if quiet domestic drama sounds too restrained, with sexual material and a few startling food-related images among the jokes.

About Tampopo
In this humorous paean to the joys of food, a pair of truck drivers happen onto a decrepit roadside shop selling ramen noodles. The widowed owner, Tampopo, begs them to help her turn her establishment into a paragon of the "art of noodle-soup making". Interspersed are satirical vignettes about the importance of food to different aspects of human life.
